What is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme?

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is an industry-led scheme originally supported by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (now part of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS)).It is an internationally-recognised quality assurance scheme for renewables installers. MCS has been running since 2008, certificating both the equipment and the installers of small scale renewable energy technologies against industry standards.

Why join our Microgeneration Certification Scheme?

The UK has set an ambitious target for carbon reduction towards the middle of this century. Achieving their goals will mean a reduction in the reliance on traditional sources of energy in favour of increasing the proportion of renewable technology. Previous governments have introduced renewable energy schemes such as the Green Deal and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) to drive adoption amongst homeowners. Whatever the next iteration of funding programme is, where there is demand for renewable technology, there will be equal demand for competent installers.

Once you are certified you will receive the MCS Approved Logo to gain further recognition in the minds of your customer.

Which renewable technology can be MCS certified?

Microgeneration products are technologies that produce heat or electricity from a renewable source (with a capacity of up to 45kW for heat; or up to 50kW for electricity. Stroma Certification provides Microgeneration Certification Schemes for a number of renewable technologies. The MCS standards required for compliance will vary depending on the type of renewable installation work for which you want to be certified:

Type Measure
All MCS installers MCS 001 ‘Micro-generation Installer Certification Scheme for supply, design, installation, set to work, commissioning and handover’
Green Deal approved installers MCS 023 ‘Additional Requirements for MCS Installation Companies to become Green Deal Authorised’
Solar Thermal installers MIS 3001 ‘Solar heating systems’
Solar PV installers MIS 3002 ‘Solar photovoltaic systems’
Heat pump installers (Air source and Ground source) MIS 3005 ‘Heat pump systems’
Biomass installers MIS 3004 ‘Solid Biofuel Heating Systems’

Please refer to the MCS website for guidance on all MCS application standards.
