Air Tightness Testing Training

Air tightness signifies the extent to which the building fabric enables either inward or outward air permeation. Through Approved Document Part L (England and Wales), Section 6 (Scotland) and Technical Booklet F (Northern Ireland), the Government is improving energy efficiency in the built environment by stipulating, amongst other things, that specific levels of air tightness for new buildings are both achieved and verified via air tightness testing.

Course information

Stroma provides a 4-day course with ample theory and practical hands on training, combined with pre-course reading to pass the final day examinations and commence registration as a Level 1 tester on the ATTMA scheme.

Pre-course knowledge

To pass this course, it is recommended that delegates:

  • Be familiar with envelope area and volume calculations including trigonometry and Pythagoras
  • Be familiar with architectural plan, section and elevation drawings
  • Have a sound understanding of the test standards ATTMA TSL1 and TSL2, which can be downloaded from the ATTMA website:
    http://www.attma.org/downloads/
  • Have a sound understanding of the ATTMA competent person scheme, scheme documents and application forms can be downloaded from the ATTMA website:
    http://www.attma.org/join-attma/
  • Have a sound understanding of the Minimum Technical Competence (MTC) and National Occupation Standards (NOS) for the air tightness testing industry, which can be downloaded from the ATTMA website:
    http://www.attma.org/downloads/
  • Have a sound understanding of the Fantestic software, whihc is available from the Retrotec website:
    http://www.retrotec.com/software/fantestic/publish.html
  • Ideally have witnessed a test

Days 1, 2 and 3 – Classroom

The course content covers the following NOS documents as required by the MTC for a Level 1 tester:

  • ASTATT 1 - Prepare to carry out air tightness testing
  • ASTATT 2 - Prepare building for air tightness testing
  • ASTATT 3 - Carry out air tightness testing for single dwellings and other small buildings
  • ASTATT 5 - Prepare and issue the air tightness test report
  • ASTATT 6 - Calculate the area of building envelopes
  • ASTATT 7 - Manage all calibrated equipment
  • ASTATT 8 - Initiate and progress contracts with clients to carry out air tightness testing
  • ASTATT 9 - Quality assure the air tightness testing process

Assessments/Examinations

The examinations are split into 3 modules:

  • Multiple choice theory exam
  • Envelope area calculation exam
  • Practical air tightness test exam

To successfully qualify on this course delegates must pass ALL 3 module examinations on Day 4.

Delegates who have been unsuccessful in one or more examinations will be required to retake the relevant module(s) at the next available date after the required further learning and/or practical experience has been completed. The fee to retake examinations is £125 per module.

The Air Tightness Testing and Measurement Association Registration Process (ATTMA)

ATTMA Logo

After attending the training course and passing all 3 exam modules, candidates are required to carry out three unpaid air tightness tests, produce full test reports and calculations, and present these for review. The training body will confirm acceptance of these reports and refer you to ATTMA for registration, upon successfully passing the review process.

Firms must prove to ATTMA that they have access to equipment with valid UKAS calibrations and have signed and returned any other relevant forms. Fees do apply and the registration of both the firm and it's testers is renewed each year. For more information on the initial and ongoing procedures, please contact the Air Testing and Measurement Association.

Equipment

Delegates should be equipped with the following items:
