Thermal Modelling Training

Featuring HEAT modeling software.

Stroma Certification’s Thermal Modelling Training is essential for energy assessors when calculating Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) and Simplified Building Energy Models (SBEM) reports.

The four day course will enable thermal performance modellers to create calculations to recognise standards and conventions for thermal modeling. It also teaches competence in calculating thermal transmittance values (ᵠ values), temperature factors (ƒ) and elemental U-values.

Stroma Certification provides face-to-face training for prospective thermal modellers.

What is HEAT Software?

Heat is a PC-program for two and three-dimensional transient and steady-state heat transfer. Both HEAT 2D and HEAT 3D are validated to conform to the requirements of BS EN ISO 10211, allowing onward calculation of psi values (ᵠ) for linear thermal bridging.

2D and 3D graphical outputs of geometrical models are produced including:

  • Material properties
  • Numerical mesh
  • Boundary conditions
  • Temperature field
  • Heat flow arrays and isotherms

HEAT software is available to purchase from Stroma Certification following course completion.

Integration with FSAP 2012 software

Thermal bridge software links U, ƒ and ᵠ calculations into Stroma Certification’s DCLG approved FSAP 2012 software which saves time in cross-referencing the data. FSAP 2012 is available to members of our Domestic on Construction Energy Assessment (DOCEA) certification scheme.

Course Information

Thermal Modelling training is not currently referenced by a Government certification scheme. Following course completion candidates will be able to demonstrate competence in modeling construction details in commonly occurring and complex thermal bridges across many building types.

Day 1:

  • An overview of the Building Regulations relating to thermal performance
  • Detailed analysis of the theory and conventions governing the quantification of linear thermal bridging

Day 2:

  • An in-depth study of the core content described in the BR497 Conventions for ‘calculating linear thermal transmittance values and temperature factors’ document and Information Paper 1/06
  • Discussion into the specific aspects of the process outlined in the relevant British Standard technical documents BS EN ISO 10211, 6946 and 13370 to provide a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the subject

Day 3:

  • Introduction to the HEAT 2D modelling software used to calculate the fundamental outputs of thermal bridging, linear thermal transmittance values and temperature factors
  • Examples are used to build experience with the software interface and to develop the skills required in applying the conventions taught during Day 1
  • Details of increasing complexity are constructed within the HEAT 2D package, culminating in the modelling of several realistic building details
  • Demonstrations and an introduction to the scope of HEAT 3D software used for calculating three-dimensional thermal bridges. Examples are offered to familiarise users with the software package

Day 4:

  • The basics of three-dimensional modelling obtained in Day 3 are further enhanced through the modelling of penetration and corner details, again resulting in the analysis, understanding and calculation of day-to-day scenarios.

Upon completion of the Thermal Modelling training, candidates are required to submit a portfolio. Following a successful portfolio assessment the thermal modeling qualification will be awarded.
